‘W’ is for Words

So many words in the English language start from W, including question words like Who, Why, When, and Where.

When pronouncing the letter, kids have to put in effort since it contains multiple syllables compared to pronouncing other letters in the alphabet. ‘W’ sounds like ‘double U’ and, when written, looks like a double V. When you start sounding out words that start from the W, the letter sounds completely different.

To teach kids how the letter W sounds in a word, pucker up your lips in a circle and exhale as you say ‘wuh’. Some kids may initially confuse the pronunciation with the sound of the letter ‘v’, but with practice, they’re sure to start telling the difference in no time! Have a little fun with your kids as you teach them how to read, write, and speak the letter W.
