    Embracing the Short Vowel Sound

    Short vowel sounds are present in most two- and three-letter-words. That is why it is so essential for your kindergartener to be comfortable with them! When they know how to identify and use the sound, they will be able to apply their learning to spell and read new words.

    Understanding Short Vowel Sounds

    At this stage, your kindergartener is just getting familiar with letter sounds. The vowel sounds are different from consonants in many ways. The most significant difference is that while sounding out the vowels, we use the whole mouth and have open lips and mouth formations. This is what you need to share with your child in the start.

    To begin with, sound out the letter and ask your child to make the same formation with their lips. It will help them learn to articulate the sound correctly.

    Now move on to long and short; not vowel sounds, but the concept of long and short. Show them long and short objects to begin with. Now, take the letter ‘O’. The short letter sound quite literally cuts the sound off abruptly. The long sound is drawn out. Exaggerate the sound and ask your child to throw open their arms wide if it is a long sound, or keep them huddled together for the short one. It will help clarify the difference between the two.

    Now bring in the sound. It can be done with the help of simple interactive games that can help them sort the sound. Try and keep the vowel sounds separate initially, only sort them among consonants and one vowel to avoid confusion. You can have them choose between multiple vowel sounds later.
