    Play Around with Bossy R

    Do you notice a difference in the words ‘bar’, ‘corn,’ and ‘bird’?

    The letter ‘R’ plays a major role in how the words are pronounced. Can you figure why these words sound so different? Well, this is because, in these words, R is preceded by a vowel. In all the above words, R is preceded by vowels - a, o, and i. The vowel becomes an R-controlled vowel. The R-controlled vowel is also referred to as the Bossy R.

    The Magic of Bossy R Words

    A syllable with R combination always has at least one vowel followed by R.The different combinations that go with bossy R are - ar, er, ir, or, ur, ear, etc. So, if you’re struggling to teach your kids bossy R words, you probably need to focus on some simple techniques.

    Begin with ‘ar’ or ‘or.’ They are tricky, and you can simply practice them with the help of examples. They usually have more than one sound. For instance, the ‘ar’ sound is heard in ‘car,’ but this sound is slightly different in ‘beggar’ or ‘arrow.’

    Similarly, you can hear the ‘or’ sound in corn, but when it comes to ‘doctor,’ then the sound changes to ‘er.’ Likewise, ‘er,’ ‘ir,’ and ‘ur’ words sound the same, such as in ‘perk,’ ‘sir’ and ‘burn.’

    The best way to learn bossy R words is to categorize them into five broadheads. An ‘r’ follows each vowel. The different heads are - ar, er, ir, or, and ur.

    Try to show your kids as many examples as possible. Ask them to look around themselves and then learn the words. The more they experiment and explore, the greater will be the learning experience.
