    Vowel Sounds – The Long and Short of It

    Vowels are perhaps the most empowered letters. They get to decide exactly how a word will be pronounced. See how you can get from the ‘tip’ to the ‘top’ with only the vowels? Now, learning vowel sounds can be tricky. For one, we start with the short vowel sounds that have little connection with the letter sound. And then there are long sounds to learn as well.

    Mastering the Long Vowel Game

    First graders usually know their short vowel sounds, even if all of them haven’t been able to use them in words yet. It is a great time to build on different sounds and slowly introduce the long vowel sounds.

    When introducing long vowel sounds, begin by asking your child to look carefully at the formation of your mouth. Vowels are almost always pronounced with the mouth open. Get them to mimic the formation of your lips and try to sound out the word.

    Long vowel songs can be a fantastic way to help your child build familiarity with the sounds and practice them. It is a good step before you move on to words and long vowel sounds in them.

    You have probably now reached a stage where you can help your child practice long vowel sounds in words. Most of them are formed with the help of the Magic ‘E’.     Begin with the five basic long vowel sounds. Avoid bringing in the ‘y’ or other long vowel sounds made by combining two vowels like ‘ai’ or ‘ea’. These will only confuse your child.
