The 'th' digraph has several sounds when used separately in the middle, end, and beginning of a word. To decode words that contain this special digraph, it's essential to teach kids voiced and unvoiced digraphs individually, where kids are made to understand the blend and segment the various sounds associated with it.

'Th' digraphs can be divided into the following:

Words with single syllables that contain short vowels and one consonant such as that, them, thus, then, thin.
Words with single syllables that contain long vowels and a silent 'e' sound such as these, there, those.

Additionally, you can divide words according to where the digraph shows up in the word:

Words beginning with 'th' such as thin, thank, this, that
Words with 'th' in the middle such as pathway, lithium
Words that end with 'th' such as growth, path, math

Of course, many of these words are complicated ones, and we recommend helping your kids practice 'th' digraph words that have four or five letters, to begin with, depending on the grade they are in.
