What is “measurement”?
Definition of measurement at this level is classified as per the quantity. “Measurement” in the practical aspect refers to the defined magnitude of a quantity or figure in globally accepted standard units. It evaluates the size (distance, height or length) and weight/mass and volume/capacity for analysis.
Other measurable quantities are time, area and perimeter. Each quantity has different instruments to measure in standard units.

Time measurement
Time measurement is used for evaluating the time interval or the duration required to perform a task. Contemporary time measurement devices are wall-clocks, wrist-watch, stopwatch, and calendar.
Each analog clock has 12 equal divisions. Each division has 5 minutes. A usual analog clock has 3 hands. These hands are second, minute and hour hand. The hour hand is smaller than a minute hand. Whereas, the second hand is a relatively thinnest hand on a clock. Also, it has a continuous motion.

The other time-measurement instrument is a calendar. The English calendar has 12 months from January to December. These months have approximately 52 weeks in total, classified from Sunday to Monday. How to read and record time?
The three hands on an analog clock complete the rotations in the defined magnitude to display the correct time. Starting from number 12, the following is the rotation cycle:
- The second-hand moves from right to left till number 6 and left to right till number 12 to complete a minute. 60 divisions, each of 1 second complete 1 minute
- With each rotation of “second” hand, “minute” hand moves further by 1 minute
- A “minute” hand moves from right to left till number 6 and left to right till number 12 to complete 1 hour
- To calculate the number of minutes elapsed for the respective hour, multiply the number pointed by the “minute” hand to 5
- With each rotation of “minute” hand, “hour” hand moves from one number to the proceeding number

To record a time, check the numbers pointed by each hand.
For example, if hour hand points to number 2 and minute hand points to number 3, then the time will be calculated by multiplying the number 3 to 5. It will be written as:
- 2 hours, 15 minutes or a quarter past 2.
If the “hour&rrdquo; hand is pointing to the number “4” and the “minute” hand is pointing to the number “6”, then the time will be written as:
- 4 hours, 30 minutes or half past 4
If the “hour” hand is pointing to the number “6” and the “minute” hand is pointing to the number “9”, then the time will be written as:
- 6 hours, 45 minutes or quarter to 6
If the “hour” hand is pointing to the number “8” and the “minute” hand is pointing to the number “12”, then the time will be written as:
- 8 o’clock
Application
Time recording and measurement is useful in day-to-day events. The overall routine of the day is scheduled by suitably dividing the time slots.
In the events like sports activities, matches, athletics and similar events, recording of the time is an essential as per the rules.

- There are 2 systems of reading & recording time as follows:
- 12-hour format – the system is commonly used in households and offices to read and record time
- The clock cycle starts at 12 midnight and runs through noon
- Read as AM (After meridian, covers the night and morning hours)
- The hour count starts from 0 to 12
- Clock cycle continues again until midnight 12 to complete a day
- Read as PM (Post meridian, covers afternoon and evening hours)
- The hour count starts from 00 hours and continues till 2400 hours
- 24-hour format – the system is widely used for navigation, military time reading and scientific purpose to prevent any confusion
- The clock cycle continues for the complete 24 hours to mark a day
- The time is read and recorded in 4 numbers, for example, 02:00 PM will be written as 1400 hours. After 12:00 noon, time appends to 13 instead of 1.
Weight & Capacity
- Weight/mass measurement – The amount evaluated to weigh an object which is solid in shape. It determines how heavy the object is?
- Volume/capacity measurement – The space an object (in liquid form) takes up is the volume. For a hollow object, the volume is the amount of liquid that object can hold.
Thus, the measurement units for the weights of solids and volume are different.
Application
Weight and volume measurement are widely used to portion the food items. Different weighing scales are used to weigh human body weight for the general and medical purpose. Measurement of food items as per recipe directions is applied in the preparation of gourmet foods.
Volume measurement is used to measure liquids such as juices, syrup, oil, water, and gasoline. With defined capacity, the suitable volume is filled in the containers to hold the liquid. For example, a full carafe measures 750 ml or 25.3 U.S. fluid ounces. A lemonade drink requires one glass of water or 250 milliliters of water.
Weight and volume measurement are highly useful in maths and applied sciences. The instruments for measurement are used in laboratories to conduct tests and scientific research as well. Also, the simple weighing scale (generally with a weight limit up-to 5 kilograms) is used to weight postal mail and luggage for courier purpose.

Data representation?
To comprehend a large set of data for easy interpretation, graphical presentation methods such as the bar graphs and line plots are used.
Different bars (vertical or horizontal) corresponding to figures and different categories are drawn to compare the data in bar graphs. For line plots, values are marked against a number line with equal divisions. These values are referred as frequency. Division on the line plot can change depending on the range of data.

Application:
As data representation on bar and line are graphical techniques for representing data, interpretation is relatively easy. The graphical representation is also helpful in deducing a mathematical relationship or hypothesis between two or more quantities. These quantities are either fixed or variable in nature and may cross each other.
In later grades, word problems to find break-even points or the correlation of two quantities is used to learn statistical methods easily.

Area & perimeter
The objects around can be measured using physical quantities like length, height, weight or volume (for liquids). Another measurable quantity of 2-dimensional or 3-dimensional objects is the “area” of that object.
It is defined as the number of unit squares contained in an object. The units of measurement are standard units of measurement (metric and US customary). As it’s a square, the unit used will be prefixed to it. For example, square meter, a square inch or square feet.

Another measurable attribute of 2-dimensional objects is the perimeter. It is the sum of the sides for the given polygon measured in the standard units.
Application
The two quantities are highly useful. Efficient placement of objects can be done by calculating the area. The objects can be a table, carpet, cupboard or a cot.
The perimeter is useful to calculate the periphery of fields by farmers. It is also applied in calculating the construction material required to fence a field or a park.

Finding missing sides:
In complex word problems, kids can easily find the missing length of any side by visual observation.
